Director, Software Quality Engineering

So we can continue to help others love how they live in moments that matter, the iconic brand is looking for a driven and passionate professional to raise the bar and join our Technology department as a Director, Quality Engineering located in our Northbrook, IL corporate office.

The Director of Quality Engineering will be an experienced leader who will collaboratively refine the vision around Quality and build the strategy, team, process, and tools to achieve it. This role will report into the Chief Technology Officer and work closely with the various software development teams and business partners across the organization to ensure the highest level of quality for our technology products and solutions.

  • Champion continuous improvement efforts and defect reduction initiatives to establish an effective Quality Management System.
  • Craft a compelling long-term technology quality vision and set goals to meet it.
  • Lead the charge on defining a quality mindset across functional, performance and security areas with peers in engineering, product management and customer experience.
  • Build and deploy the necessary quality process that enables our teams to exceed our customer’s expectations of quality.
  • Define our northstar quality metrics and then set goals against them; work cross-functionally to define a culture of both monitoring these goals and how we effectively move them over time.
  • Support product engineering efforts by participating in design and development projects representing quality engineering and the customer.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and problem resolution to identify effective corrective actions and process improvements.
  • Lead and coach a diverse set of quality analysts, engineers and managers tasked with automated and manual testing as well as building the internal tools and infrastructure to efficiently execute this testing.
  • Build the next generation of quality infrastructure upon which Crate&Barrel’s future products will be crafted.

Required Skills
  • Degreed professional (Computer Science, Information Technology or related degree) required
  • A minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in quality engineering and testing
  • A minimum of 8 years in a management capacity, including leadership at the Director level leading teams that manage quality engineering for software solutions
  • Hands-on experience with developing and leveraging automation and test framework tools to be able to shape the future of the development process at Crate & Barrel
    • Experience with visual regression testing tools like Cypress or Jest or equivalent
    • Experience with Saucelabs, Browserstack or equivalent
    • Experience with browser and mobile automation testing tools like Selenium, NightwatchJS, Codeception or equivalent
    • Experience with test management solutions like RainforestQA or qTest or equivalent
    • Working experience with setting up and configuring Jenkins or CircleCI or similar tools
  • Excellent understanding of software QA concepts, recommended practices, and methodology that cover regression testing, functional testing, security testing, performance testing, UAT, and integration testing
  • Excellent understanding of appropriate regulatory or statutory compliance standards, including PCI, SOX, GDPR, and information security, and incorporating these into the testing strategy
  • Strong knowledge of security standards of testing web based technologies including OWSAP
  • Strong knowledge of performance testing tools and processes
  • Demonstrated experience of structuring the quality team to work effectively with offshore resources
  • Strong understanding of Agile and traditional SDLC
  • Experience working with JIRA
  • Five or more years of experience in large, cross-functional teams influencing senior-level management and key stakeholders effectively across the organization and within complex contexts preferred
  • Retail experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, organization design and development
  • Proven experience or demonstrated capability in leading quality management of technology transformational initiatives in complex and dynamic environments preferred
  • Passionate, extremely knowledgeable, and hands-on about quality engineering, shipping reliable, secure and highly-performant software, scripting, tooling, quality analytics and metrics, continuous integration, bug discovery, and automation
  • Establish and champion appropriate metrics for the quality organization, set clear goals and leverage those to help improve both our processes and our teams
  • Extensive experience building and leading large teams, coaching managers, and developing people
  • Extensive domain experience in quality with significant depth across functional, performance and security areas
  • Experience leading diverse quality teams and building technology and tools in a growing organization
  • Significant experience leveraging third party resources onsite and offshore to complement internal teams
  • Good reading, written and verbal language skills (English)
