Principal Architect - Stores, Customer Care, Design Services & B2B

Location: Northbrook, Illinois

We are seeking a visionary Principal Architect, with 10+ years of experience to be a key strategic thought leader, defining and driving the architectural vision for a domain or business area. You'll partner with technology leaders and product directors to shape the technical direction of our organization, providing guidance and mentorship to development teams and ensuring the design of scalable, secure, and innovative systems. A day in the life as a Director, Architecture:

  • Define and evolve the architectural roadmap supporting the supporting Stores, Customer Care, Design Services and B2B domains and platforms, ensuring alignment with business objectives and industry best practices.

  • Define, advocate, and govern the architectural vision, strategy, standards, and best practices within the Stores, Customer Care,Design Services and B2B domain, business area, and platforms, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and driving architectural excellence.

  • Provides technical leadership and architectural guidance to product teams, ensuring the design and implementation of scalable, secure, and maintainable systems that meet evolving business needs.

  • Collaborates with other principal architects and stakeholders, including senior technology leaders and product directors, to drive architectural decisions that impact the broader technology landscape and shape the future of our systems.

  • Mentor and coach senior engineers and architects, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.

  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new technologies, tools, and methodologies to improve system performance, scalability, and maintainability.

  • Identify and mitigate architectural risks and technical debt, ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of our systems.

  • Ensure that architectural designs meet non-functional requirements such as performance, scalability, security, reliability, and maintainability.

  • Create and maintain comprehensive architectural documentation, including design specifications, diagrams, and technical standards.

What you'll bring to the table:

  • Ability to provide technical leadership and guidance in defining and implementing architectural standards and designs.

  • Proven ability to develop and implement architectural strategies that align with business objectives.

  • Expertise in various software development methodologies, including Agile, Waterfall, and DevOps.

  • Strong understanding of cloud computing, IT infrastructure, and cybersecurity principles.

  • Ability to design and document complex solution architectures.

  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages.

  • Deep understanding of the business domain or platform and its strategic implications.

  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences and influence senior executives.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence technical teams without direct authority.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Minimum of 10+ years of extensive experience in software engineering or other area of technical expertise, with 5+ years in a technical leadership or architectural role. 

  • Proven track record of designing and implementing large-scale, distributed, and highly available systems.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent extensive practical experience). Ph.D. is a plus.


Starting Rate: $155,000.00 - $230,000.00

Pay ranges will be adjusted upward as needed to comply with applicable state and local law. In addition to your salary, based on your role, associates may be eligible for other compensation including bonuses, sales incentives, and long term incentives.
